Your new Science lab design and layout including prep rooms
Refurbishment of science labs in schools and colleges always begin with the key question “how do you want to teach in here?” Teaching staff and lab technicians all have their own method in managing the spaces before, during and after lessons and working with you and your methods is the key to delivering a workable solution for delivering and supporting the science aspects of STEM learning.
Prep rooms are also refurbished in line with your working practices and, whilst no teaching occurs in these areas, they are the central hub for the department. Understanding how equipment and lessons are prepared from these areas reveals how the best use of space can be achieved.
Safe working distances are an essential consideration where chemicals and equipment are being used, so understanding how traffic flows through the lab and the recommendations of Building Bulletin 80 and will be taken in into account when making design proposals.

Science lab refurbishment at Huddersfield Grammar School
A-Z Design Solutions were awarded the contract to convert two existing classrooms into one single science laboratory and completely refurbish a physics laboratory. The remodelling works consisted of demolition of existing walls, erection of new walls, creation of new doorways and new mechanical and electrical services provision being made prior to the main part of the work being started.
A-Z Design worked closely with the school staff to understand all of the design criteria and, after tweaking layout drawings in order to ensure every aspect of the project had been catered for, a full programme of works was produced to allow the project to be completed over the summer holiday period.
The A-Z site team ensured services were isolated before existing furniture was carefully removed. The new partition walls were erected to create a new prep room facility and a chemical storage room with a dedicated extraction system. In the physics laboratory new service riser positions were created to accommodate the new layout and floor channels cut into the slab to carry the new gas and electric services. Each area was fitted with new ceilings, lighting, full decoration and new vinyl floor covering ready for the installation of the fitted furniture. Trespa worktops were installed and the project was completed with final connections, testing and commissioning to all of the services. Gas safety systems were also installed to both areas along with bespoke floor to ceiling storage to suit the department's requirements.
The transformation to these spaces is remarkable and the school’s bold choice of colours for the furniture really sets it apart from other installations completed. This was a fantastic project to work on.

Science lab design and creation at Hayes School
A-Z Design Solutions were awarded the contract at Hayes School to convert a total of five maths classrooms into two science laboratories and one sixth form laboratory. The project involved an extensive amount of building and remodelling works to enable the spaces to be transformed.
Working closely with the school staff, the design and specification requirements were developed. Following the production of layout drawings and consultation with all of the key stakeholders, the programme and sequence of works was proposed and work commenced during school term time
There were no services in the proposed refurbishment area so routes had to be determined in order to bring the water, waste, gas and electricity to each of the rooms. Given that pupils were still on site at the time of the works, meticulous project and health and safety planning were essential to the smooth running of the contract. Redundant furniture was removed, brick partition walls were demolished, floor channels for services cut into the floor slab to carry the mechanical and electrical services required to achieve the desired furniture layout.
New partition walls were erected to create a new prep room facility. All had new ceilings, lighting, full decoration and a new vinyl floor covering ready for the installation of the furniture. Laboratory grade Trespa worktops were installed and the project was completed with final connections, tests and commissioning to all of the services.
The new science labs have been transformed from their former use and school business manager Mrs June Riley said:
“A-Z have converted four of our classrooms into two full size labs and one classroom into an A level Science teaching space. The work was completed in a professional manner, to a high standard and on time. We are extremely pleased with our new facilities for the teaching of science and would not hesitate to recommend A-Z to other schools.”
A-Z were delighted to have worked with Hayes School and we look forward to future projects with them.
