Conversion of Maths Classrooms to Laboratories

A-Z Design Solutions were awarded the contract at Hayes School to convert a total of five maths classrooms into two science laboratories and one sixth form laboratory. The project involved an extensive amount of building and remodelling works to enable the spaces to be transformed.

Working closely with the school staff the design and specification requirements were quickly understood. Following the production of layout drawings and consultation with all of the key stakeholders, the programme and sequence of works was  proposed and work commenced during school term time. There were no services in the local area so routes had to be  determined in order to bring the water, waste, gas and electricity to each of the rooms. Given that pupils were still on site at the time of the works, meticulous project and health and safety planning were essential to the smooth running of the contract.

Redundant furniture was removed, brick partition walls were demolished, floor channels for services cut into the floor slab to carry the mechanical and electrical services required to achieve the desired furniture layout. New partition walls were erected to create a new prep room facility all with new ceilings, lighting, full decoration, new vinyl floor covering ready for the installation of the furniture. Laboratory grade Trespa worktops were installed and the project was completed with final connections, tests and commissioning to all of the services.

The areas do not resemble anything like their former use and school business manager Mrs June Riley said:

“A-Z have converted four of our classrooms into two full size labs and one classroom into an A level Science teaching space. The work was completed in a professional manner, to a high standard and on time. We are extremely pleased with our new facilities for the teaching of science and would not hesitate to recommend A-Z to other schools.”
